The most common way right now is to swap filament in the same extruder, but there are also tool-changer style 3D printers emerging, where they swap out the toolhead to print an already loaded and ready filament for faster color-changing and less waste. Some printers use an automated swapping system outside the printer (like Bambu Lab AMS) that can be expanded to print 4,8,12,16 or even more colors in one print.
